Zirconia has good mechanical properties and biocompatibility but is often highly opaque, resulting in a lack of translucency. In this study, we investigated the application of laser irradiation to improve the translucency of zirconia. The zirconia samples were coated with a veneer of alumina or a veneer of zirconia followed by laser irradiation. The veneers and zirconia specimens were sintered in an air atmosphere. The thickness of the zirconia veneer was 2 mm. As a control, a conventional zirconia surface was prepared. Mechanical testing and surface evaluation were performed after firing. Most of the zirconia samples with zirconia veneers received 50 laser irradiation shots with a wavelength of 457 nm. The samples were fired at 1300 degrees C for 1 hr. The specimens were subjected to failure testing in the plane parallel to the veneer. The samples with zirconia veneer received greater forces during the failure testing (initial failure forces were 182 N for the zirconia, 10 N for the alumina, and 10 N for the zirconia veneer), showing that it was possible to obtain a large translucency index, LTa. The zirconia veneer specimens with 50 laser irradiation shots showed considerably improved values for translucency (LTa). However, the LTa of the specimens with zirconia veneer and 50 laser irradiation shots was less than that of the control group; the LTa of the zirconia-veneer specimens was approximately 2.3-fold higher than that of the control group.
